Mothers day is fast approaching, and with all the tumult of the past year, it’s easier than ever to forget about the one day a year Mum’s are rewarded for all their hard work. Since most of us can’t be with our mums this year, our afternoon tea reservations (if you’re trying to score some brownie points) are null and void, so it’s time to move on to plan B!
If you’re anything like me, then plan B consists mostly of a quick card from the supermarket and a rather sad looking bunch of flowers. Maybe some chocolates, but only if they survive the journey to their socially distanced drop off points.
But come on? Surely all those years of wiping runny noses and pretending your nativity performances were Oscar-worthy deserve a little bit more? Don’t worry if you’re stumped for ideas, here at Taylor's we’ve got the perfect solution. Our Malcolm Appleby jewellery range has one of a kind pieces that each make a fabulous gift. They're sure to blow the socks off the shrewdest of Mum’s, although it might be difficult to top next year!
A jeweller with a difference
Malcolm Appleby, the wonderfully talented silversmith behind these pieces, was born in West Wickham in 1946. He would later begin his extensive training at the Central school of art, the Sir John Cass school of art and the Royal College of Art in London. By 1969, he was already a Littledale scholar at the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths which dates back to the twelfth century!
Around the same time, Malcolm set up his atelier in Grandtully, a wee village right in the heart of Perthshire. Since then, Malcolm Appleby has spent the majority of his working life in Scotland and has taken inspiration from the great outdoors we’re so known for.
Since he has set up shop in Perthshire, Malcolm Appleby’s list of achievements has just kept on growing. His commissions have included a silver cup for the London Assay Office’s 500th anniversary, a cruet set for 10 Downing Street, a raven gun for the Royal Armouries and a table piece for Bute House.
His work has been showcased in galleries across the world, with a silver teapot and bowl featuring in the Art Gallery of Western Australia! Closer to home, Malcolm Appleby’s silversmith skills have taken pride of place at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh, with several pieces of his jewellery featuring over the years. As if all of this wasn’t impressive enough, Malcolm was awarded an MBE in 2014 for his services to engraving.
Malcolm Appleby Jewellery
From works of art displayed in galleries around the world, to handmade jewellery you can bring home for Mum. From his Perthshire atelier, Malcolm Appleby has been creating beautiful silver jewellery for decades. His range of show-stopping engraved jewellery is full of incredibly unique pieces made right here in Scotland.
Even closer to our home is the Malcolm Appleby Banchory Bangle, which since 1977 has raised more than £160,000 for the Scottish charity; Children 1st. The charity helps to keep children safe all over Scotland, and Dr Appleby has designed forty-three bangles to raffle off for the cause.
The artist himself describes his jewellery as “a chance to wrap nature around your wrist” and it’s easy to see what he means! Inspired by nature, our range of Malcolm Appleby jewellery has some of his best work ready to wow for Mothers day.
Our sparrows and holly open bangle is a wonderful example of Malcolm Appleby’s work and includes many of his hallmarks. The Mayflower open bangle is a brilliant way to revamp the old standard and keeps for much longer too. Decorated with sterling silver flowers all the way around, this bangles stunning floral design is a favourite with our customers. You might be able to spot the butterfly details on the inner side of the bangle; with these pieces, every part is handmade with great care and detail you won’t see in many jewellers!
Another favourite among our Malcolm Appleby jewellery collection is our Daisy Field open bangle, which also borrows from nature for a floral themed gift that blows real daisies out of the water. Hand etched onto sterling silver, this bangle features rows of individual daisies in its design. A gorgeous pick that brings all the charm of a nice bunch of flowers, without needing chucking out after a week of course.
