We’ve taken you behind the scenes before, with a sneak peek at our flooring installations, an interview with one of our fabulous interior designers and even a chat with Malcolm Appleby.
In this blog, however, we’re doing things a wee bit differently. After all, it’s a special occasion! It’s our birthday and an important one at that. We’re turning 40, and festivities are very much in order. You only turn the big four-oh once, so we’re making the most of it.
Forty years in business is quite a milestone, and it’s got us feeling a bit introspective. So we thought, what better way to celebrate 40 years of Taylor’s than going back to the very beginning and seeing how far we’ve come?

Going Back To Where It All Began
While the brick-and-mortar of our shop has stayed the same over the decades, our storefront couldn’t look more different. The muted browns of our logo screams early 80s, and you can spot a few of our first pieces in the window.
The home decor of the 1980s was dominated by a few select trends, and they are surprisingly easy to put a modern twist on! Pastels were all the rage and have cycled around to take over Pinterest in 2022.
Why not give this trend a chic and contemporary upgrade with a pastel pink sofa? Pairing pink and green was a huge trend when we opened for business, and is set to be one of the biggest trends of this year.
Brass accessories were another big feature of 80s home decor, so why not turn back with the clock with beautiful brass touches? No matter the styles, one thing that has always stayed consistent is our dedication to the community we are so proud to serve.
Making The Move Online
After we opened in 1982, we spent the next few decades building a strong relationship with the community here in Banchory. Our team are a part of the fabric that makes up the high street, and our Manager Keith has served the public for many years now.
We take quite a bit of pride in offering the very best of British furniture to our customers and have always made sure we look good doing it. As you can see, we moved on from the browns of the early eighties and adopted a more timeless look for our shopfront!
Our dedication to the local community has never wavered, however, we did think about how we could widen our reach. We decided to make the leap, and take Taylor’s from the High Street to the rest of the world. Our website was soon born, and we began helping homes all over the UK look incredible.
Taylor's Today
Now that we’re forty, we reach homes all over the UK and have helped make hundreds of houses a home. We stock furniture from the best suppliers that the UK has to offer, as well as paints, wallpaper and fabulous flooring.
It’s certainly been a journey to get here, but we’ve made some incredible memories along the way. From our work with Malcolm Appleby on the Banchory Bangle to the people we see every day, we are thrilled to be celebrating 40 years of Taylor’s!
While our shop has grown, so have our services. Our in-store interior designers are always on hand to help bring your dream home to life, while our mattress recycling service allows us to do our bit for the planet.
A Message From Dick And Theresa
We're celebrating 40 years of business this week, and that is thanks to the amazing local support we have, so a big thank you to our customers and staff! Especially Keith Gilbert, who has been with us for 40 years.
We've seen many changes over the years, rebranding twice, once in 2000 and again in 2020. We have also seen a change in shopping patterns since COVID, with many people shopping online but also locally which is wonderful to see.
